Amelia

I love family history, but sometimes I want to throw my computer out of a window.  My great grandmother was named Amelia, and her mother was named Amelia and her mother, I have no idea.  

My great grandmother's full names was Amelia Catherine Kolmann. (I think)

I have seen a great deal of variations to the spelling, here are a few...

....at one point her middle initial becomes an L.  

My father only remembers her by "Grandma," and his great grandmother who was also named Amelia he knew only as "Grossmutter."  So at least that gives us a country of origin, Germany.  But not much else....

I know Amelia Catherine Kolmann was born August 23, 1897 in Pennsylvania.  And during her childhood she traveled to and from Germany with her mother.  So you would think that would mean she would have a passport, but I have not found her passport or even an application.  (Yes, I tried her mother too.)

I found 1 ship manifest in German of her leaving Germany, but nothing heading to Germany in the first place.  

I know she married my great grandfather, Patrick Joseph Welsh, but I have not been able to find their marriage license.  I am guessing they got married before 1915, since that was the time they had their first daughter, Virginia Eleanor Welsh "Jeanie", but I can't prove it.

Amelia died on August 1, 1977 in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.  At the time she was living with her youngest daughter and her family in Export, PA.  This is the only part of her life of which I am certain.  

So many pieces of one life, but as of this moment, that is all they are.  Someday I hope to be able to take all these pieces of Amelia and sew a beautiful quilt of her life together for both myself, my daughter, but most of all for my father.

Ladies in the Newspaper

Search for your female ancestors is never the simplest task.  

First name, nick name, she hated her first name so she went by her middle name, oh by the way she got married 3 times, and so you must account for all those changes....  It can be a bit dizzying, but there is a gold mind waiting for you if you can just figure out what her name was.

Newspapers, mores specifically Newspapers.com!  A virtual oasis of records and stories about your female ancestors.  Sometimes as family historians we can get sucked into the vital records, jumping from one census to the next.  But if you stop to smell the newspapers, you will find they smell just as good as a bouquet of roses.  Today I was researching my 4th Great Grandfather, Noah Kidder Burton (1811-1904), and low and behold I found his wife's obituary!!!  

Clearly I am thrilled, but it is extremely frustrating that she would not even be allowed her full name on her own obituary, she is still the wife of her husband.  Now, I love my husband, but so help me God, I will have my full name in my obituary if I have to write it into my will!  Judith Ann Burton nee Smith (1812-1893) is one of my favorite ancestors.  I know it isn't politically correct to have favorites, but both Judith and her husband Noah are some of mine.

Judith's grandfather (Reuben Weed) was a American Revolutionary War soldier.  And a link for me to someday join the DAR, but first I have to prove 7 generations of ladies....  Why my connection couldn't be filled with men, I will never know.  But alas, I digress....

So, getting back on topic, if you are looking for the ladies in your family, make sure to search for every variation of both her, and every man in her life: husband, father, brother and even her sons.  

Here are some ideas for different types of newspaper records to search for:

• Obituaries or death notices
• Engagement announcements
• Marriage announcements
• Application for a marriage license
• Birth announcement 
• The Society page
• Legal troubles: Example being a land dispute or notice of fraud.
• Political news: Did your ancestor run for Mayor or City Council?
• Sports: Did you grandfather throw the winning pitch for the State Championship?
• Advertisements for a business your family owned and operated
• Or even something written by your ancestor, instead of something written about them.  

My great grandmother was responsible for writing the social section of her local paper, The Oil City Derrick, for years.

Food for the Family

Woman are the heartbeat of a family.  Woman are a huge part of creating the environment in which their family either flourish or sadly fade.  One way to enrich that environment is through food.  

No U.S. Census is going to tell you what your Great-Grandmother's go to meal was on a Friday night, but her recipe box that is in your mother's attic might.  Thinking out of the box to mold your female ancestor's lives is key, since much of their lives was not documented like they male counterparts.  

If you know your female ancestor had a signature dish, you may be able to research the origins of where the meal was created that may point you into area where you have family roots.  Or it may just give you a glimpse into their daily lives.  

My mother remembers her grandmother (Elsie May Miller nee Burton) making her silver dollar sized pancakes and sausage for breakfast and they would dress it with either sugar or maple syrup from the sugar maple trees they family had on their property.  All the children would boast about how many pancakes they were able to eat, a sort of contest between siblings.  

Other the other hand, my Grandmother on my paternal line (Elizabeth Jane Ferraro nee Welsh) taught me how to make ravioli.  Now the trickier part is, that she was not from Italy.  She was actually both Irish and German, but she married a man from Calabria, Italy.  Therefore she learned and passed down all the family recipes that she had learned from her mother-in-law.  

I will end with one of my favorite recipe cards that I found with my maternal grandmother's (Julia May Youngman nee Miller) recipe box.  It is a recipe for a Butter-less, Egg-less, Milk-less Cake.  Notice, the reasoning for such extreme lack of basic ingredients.  (Rationing for WW II.)

The Woman I Would Ask 1,000 Questions

My maternal grandmother died when I was a sophomore in college.  I had known her all my life, but I grew up 8 hours from her, so I only spent a few days with her 2 or 3 times a year.  Though our time together was short, I adored her.

Two years after I graduated from college I got married to my sweet husband, and at that point, we decided that we would begin looking into our family history.  

I took the lead, and I soon realized that I had missed such a huge opportunity to learn so much from my grandmother.  Remember that cheesy conversation starter:  "If you could talk to one person in history either alive or dead, who would it be?"  Julia May Miller is my answer.  

First off, I would introduce her to my husband and then place her great-granddaughter in her arms.  I would ask her about growing up in rural Clarion county, Pennsylvania during the Depression.  I would ask her about graduating from high school.  I would ask her what she wrote in her journal the day she met my grandfather.  I would ask her how she carried on while my grandfather was in France during the War.  I would ask her what her reaction was when she found out she was pregnant for the first time.  I would show her pictures of my wedding day, and pictures of our family since she left us.  We would talk for hours, we would laugh, we would cry...it would be perfect day.  I miss her.

A Passion Project

I have been working on the family history for both myself and my dear husband for about four years at this point.  But six weeks ago, my life changed forever.  I gave birth to my daughter, forever changing the way I look at my research.  Before she was a part of my life, I was doing this for my own curiosity.  Now I feel a responsibility to show her who she came from, to build a connection for her to the people that she will never have the opportunity to meet with in this lifetime at least.  

I come from a long line of woman that may have not played a significant role in the context of world history, but to me, they have shaped the world I know.  And for that, I will always be grateful.

I am the mother, a sister, a daughter, a granddaughter... 

I am a woman in my family tree. 

I have decided to use this blog platform as a tool to reach further back into history & gain more information about the woman of my family.  In many ways, woman throughout the generations have been overlooked by both their society in which they lived & by the country they swore allegiance. This will be a place where I will share stories, ask questions, and hopefully be able to answer those questions at some point God willing about these beautiful & strong woman.
